Designer

Es Devlin is a multi award winning international stage designer whose work crosses a wide range of genres including drama, dance, opera and pop.

She studied English Literature at Bristol University, Fine Art Foundation at Central St Martins and Stage Design at the Motley Theatre Design Course.

Es’s recent designs include:

Kanye West Yeezus Arena Tour, Don Giovanni at the Royal Opera House, Miley Cyrus Bangerz Arena Tour, The Master and Margarita for Complicite at Barbican Theatre and Avignon Festival, Julie Taymor’s A Midsummer Nights Dream at TFANA New York , the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park, and the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. 

Theatre includes:

For Headlong: The Nether at the Royal Court Theatre, American Psycho and Chimerica at the Almeida Theatre. Betrayal and Hinterland for the National Theatre, The Spanish Golden Age Season, Antony and Cleopatra and Henry IV for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Dumbshow and Yard Gal for the Royal Court, Hamlet at the Young Vic, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg and Machinal at Roundabout Theatre, New York and many at the Bush Theatre.

Dance includes:

Afterlight I,  Afterlight II, and The Rodin Project for Russell Maliphant, Four Scenes and God’s Plenty for Rambert and A StreetCar Named Desire for Northern Ballet Theatre

Concert tour designs include:

Lady Gaga Monsterball US Theatre/Arena Tour, Kanye / Jay Z Watch the Throne Arena Tour, Muse Resistance Arena Tour, Pet Shop Boys Electric, Pandemonium and Fundamental Arena Tours, Nitin Sawhney at IMAX Cinema, Take That Progress and Circus Stadium Tours, Imogen Heap Eclipse Tour and Massive Attack V Adam Curtis at Armory NYC and Manchester International Festival.

Es has designed operas for Barcelona, Vienna, La Scala, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Dresden, Leipzig, as well as Les Troyens and Salome at the Royal Opera House, Carmen and Gadaffi at English National Opera and Imago at Glyndebourne.

Film production design includes:

Shorts by Mike Figgis and costume design for Sally Potter’s film RAGE.

Television production designs include:

MTV Europe Music Awards (2010 and 2011) and performances for U2, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Kanye West, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and Pet Shop Boys.

Es was awarded The Olivier Award for Stage Design 2014 for Chimerica, a Tony nomination 2014 for Machinal, Critics Circle Award for Stage Design 2013, Red’s Creative Woman of the Year 2012, TPi Stage Designer of the Year Award 2012, 2011 and 2010, Olivier Award for Costume Design 2006, TMA Award for Stage Design 1998 and the Linbury Prize for Stage Design 1996. She has been nominated for this years Evening Standard Award for Stage Design for American Psycho.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Hamlet at the Barbican, Carmen on the Lake at Bregenz, Otello at the MET opera New York, the Brit Awards for ITV, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, and Der Freischutz for the Royal Opera House and U2 Arena and Stadium Tours.
